Christian Values
At Mount Pleasant CE VC Junior School, we pride ourselves on teaching children how to be well-rounded citizens through faith, family and friendship. One way we achieve this is by studying different values each half-term. This term our value is Service. It would be great if at home you are continuing conversations about helping others at school, home and within the wider community.
Curriculum
Throughout the Summer term, the children (in both Year 5 and 6) will learn a range of topics and skills.
This term in Maths, Year 5 will cover a variety of essential topics that will help them build a strong foundation in mathematical concepts. Each topic is designed to enhance their understanding and application of Maths in real-life situations. Here are the key areas we will be focusing on:
-
Ratio: Understanding how to compare quantities and apply ratios in problem-solving.
-
Algebra: Developing skills in manipulating variables and solving equations.
-
Position & Direction: Learning to navigate using coordinates and directional language.
-
Shape: Identifying and classifying shapes based on their properties.
-
Statistics: Collecting and interpreting data to make informed decisions.
-
Area, Perimeter & Volume: Calculating the size of different shapes and understanding their dimensions.
As our Year 6 children progress towards their SATs in May, they will spend recapping their learning since Year 3 and applying their knowledge to a range or previous SATs questions. Once SATs are over, the children will engage with a number of different Maths projects that will allow them to apply their learning throughout KS2 in preparation for their transition to secondary school.
In English, we are getting excted about Greeks - firstly studying the book "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief" and then reading "The Odyssey". There is some tricky vocabulary in here, but we can't wait for the children's excitement and enagement in the texts.
During the first half of the Summer Term, in RE, the children will be learning about pilgrimages across Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and a non-religious worldview. This exploration will help students understand the significance of these journeys in various faiths and perspectives. After the half term, children will delve into the Gospels in Christianity, providing them with a deeper understanding of this important aspect of the faith. The children will focus on and gain a deeper understanding of, how Christians try to follow the teachings of Jesus. Finally, the children will consider how our foundations affect our own actions.
In Geography, our Summer term unit explores the origins of global trade and the impact of trade around the world. Pupils will learn about Fair Trade, and how it helps communities in St Lucia.
In History, pupils will explore Ancient Greece and its lasting impact on the modern world. We will explore the origins of Democracy and the Olympics, the myths of the Greek Gods, and the role archaeologists have played in piecing together the past.
During the Summer term, we will conclude our recent study of light and how we need it to be able to see. Once we have finished this unit, the children will begin their study of Animals Including Humans for the remainder of the term. Within this unit, they will learn about how humans develop and change from babies through to old age. They will also learning about the different organs within the human body and their unique functions. Year 6 will also finish their study this year by developing their knowledge of Electricity and how to make a range of circuits.
French has year-group specific objectives so is taught in year groups. The Year 5 pupils will be looking at personal descriptions and describing their family. Whilst Year 6 pupils, will be learning how to follow classroom instructions, the names for sports and expressing their personal opinions.
Music - This term, pupils will be exploring the music of South and West Africa, focusing on the Shosholoza song. Through this unit, children will have opportunity to sing and play parts of the song, as well as developing and performing their own eight-beat-break.
Art and Design - Throughout this half term, the children in Upper Key Stage 2, will have the opportunity to explore a unit on Painting, that centres around Mixed Media and Portraits. This unit offers our pupils the opportunities to develop skills in creating interesting portrait drawings using words, experimenting with materials and techniques, and constructing self-portraits that represent aspects of themselves. This comprehensive unit aims to enhance their understanding and application of art vocabulary and encourages thoughtful decisions in their artwork composition.
Design and Technology - Our children will be connecting with a Cooking and Nutrition unit called Developing a Recipe. They will develop their already pre-existing cooking and nutrition knowledge and skills by learning a simple bolognese recipe and adapting it to improve its nutritional content. This unit will explore the process of beef production, provide an opportunity to research a traditional recipe (and make changes), add nutritional value to a recipe by selecting ingredients and finally prepare and cook a version of a bolognese sauce.
In PE this half term, the children in Upper Key Stage Two will be exploring ‘Health Related Exercise’ in their indoor session. In this unit of work the children will consolidate their understanding of strength, flexibility and the cardiovascular elements of fitness. They will perform cardio, flexibility and strength focused circuits enhancing their own fitness and setting their own personal best target as they reflect on their own personal journey, with an aim to beat their personal best at the end of the half term.
In their outdoor sessions their focus will be on a Games unit: striking and fielding. During this unit the children will be challenged to refine and apply their prior learning of the skills required for both batting and fielding. They will be able to create and apply tactics for both batting, and fielding (including bowling) and apply these successfully within their teams.
After half term, the focus of the children’s outdoor PE lessons will be on Athletics: running. This unit will challenge the children to consolidate their knowledge, understanding and ability to sprint effectively, individually and within a team. They will be able to develop their technique for throwing a shot putt and explore and develop an understanding of how to hurdle safely. Within their indoor sessions, the children will be focussing on understanding what makes an effective leader by unpicking the ‘STEP’ principles. Here the pupils will be able to apply their developing understanding as they lead others and identify the different attributes that make an effective leader.
Homework
As your child has now moved into the Upper Phase of their journey in Key Stage Two, we are starting to prepare them for secondary school. When the children move to secondary school, they will be expected to complete a wide range of homework and be responsible for completing and handing it in on time. Therefore, we are setting a little more homework than they would have previously had in their time at Junior School so far.
We still expect all children to practice their weekly spellings in preparation for their spelling test on Mondays and to apply in their writing. They must also read three times weekly. This must be recorded in their reading record with the dates and at least one adult signature. This will be checked on a Wednesday. If children have not read three times, they will stay in at morning break with Miss Stubbs to complete a short reading comprehension. Parents will also get a text to let them know.
We will also be setting further homework as detailed below:
Year 5 pupils will recieve 1 x piece of maths or english homework weekly which is usually based upon that week's learning, however may be a piece of 'pre-learning' to help teacher's identify gaps in learning. This may be on Emile or the children will bring home a worksheet to write on.
Year 6 pupils are set both Maths and English tasks on Emile.
Miss Stubbs is running a lunchtime club on a Monday for any children who wish to complete their homework then, are struggling to access Emile or need help.
Homework will be set on a Friday and due on a Wednesday. If children have not completed their homework by Wednesday, they will be staying in at morning break on that day to complete their homework.
We appreciate your support with this as it will help the children, not only with their learning but also with responsibility in preparation for secondary school.
PE days
The PE days are as follow:
Class 6: Monday and Tuesday
Class 7: Wednesday and Friday
Class 8: Tuesday and Thursday
Class 9: Tuesday and Wednesday
Class 10: Wednesday and Friday
Please ensure that your child comes to school on their PE day in school PE kit. This consists of black jogging trousers, plain black sports leggings or black shorts, a white PE t-shirt, an optional Mount Pleasant School hoodie or their school sweatshirt, and trainers. If your child is not in correct uniform, we will contact you and this should be rectified as soon as possible.
