LKS2 Summer Curriculum Overview
Welcome back to MPJS! We all hope that you have had a wonderful break over Easter and now the children are back to working hard in their classes.
Please see below for a brief overview of what the chidlren will be learning this term:
In Maths, our Y3 children will be continuing with time before moving on to shape and position and direction. Our Y4 children will be continuing with money before moving on to time, statistics, shape and position and direction.
In English, the children will continue to work towards their end of year objectives by using 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes to create a newspaper report; writing a recount of a tale based on 'Nen and the Lonely Fisherman' by Ian Eagleton; and practising our persuasive writing based on 'The Baker by the Sea' by Paula White.
This term's Geography will answer the question "How and why is my local area changing?" This begins with the familiar and known (the pupil’s school and its grounds). It then extends outwards in scale to consider the less familiar (local area) and finally a range of unknown locations at a global scale. In all three contexts pupils are also encouraged to reflect on some of the consequences of environmental change and to consider who or what might benefit from such changes and who in turn might be affected negatively by them.
Our examination in History will look into Pre-history as we travel back 1,000s of years to explore the timeline from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will examine settlements, tools and technological advances which allowed the human race to survive and thrive during these early times.
In R.E, our work will look at being part of a community. Children will consider what it means to be part of a community, and learn about key life rituals celebrated in Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism.
French has year-group specific objectives so is taught in year groups. Our Y3 children will begin to understand the intricacies of the French language and the grammar rules which dictate it before moving on to using adjectives and giving opinions. Our Y4 children will learn the names of the parts of the body and use monsters to practise the correct adverbial agreements which are present in the French language to accurately describe the monsters.
In Music, our Y3s will continue their learning on how to play the violin with the Wider Opportunities Peripatetic Service (WOPS). Every year, the children perform a concert to parents and carers at the end of the acadmic year to show how much they have developed their playing. Our Y4s will continue to build on last year's music, using a song as inspiration and learning to incorporate glockenspeils into their play.
In Art this term we will be looking at craft and design in a unit entitled 'The Fabric of Nature'. We will be creating drawings that replicate a selected image and choose imagery and colors to design a mood board that reflects a defined theme and color palette. We will also be studying the work of William Morris, using subject vocabulary to describe his distinctive style and contributions to design. Drawing inspiration from their mood boards and initial research, we will be creating a repeating pattern, incorporating additional details. The unit will also introduce pupils to different methods of creating printed fabric, while using sketchbooks to evaluate and refine their patterns. Finally, they will produce ideas to illustrate products using their unique designs, showcasing their creativity and understanding of the design process.
In the upcoming Design Technology unit, titled 'Structures - Pavilions,' we will explore the principles of creating strong and stable frame structures. We will begin by producing a range of free-standing frame structures in various shapes and sizes, experimenting with different designs. We will then focus on designing our own pavilion, ensuring it is both strong and stable, while also being aesthetically pleasing. As part of the design process, we will learn how to select appropriate materials and construction techniques that ensure the stability of our pavilion’s frame. Additionally, we will choose suitable materials and techniques to add cladding to our pavilion, enhancing both its functionality and visual appeal. This unit will give us hands-on experience in the design and construction of architectural models, helping us to understand key concepts in structural engineering and material selection
In our Science lessons, we’ll dive into the electrifying world of electricity! Students will explore circuits, learn about conductors and insulators, and even create simple projects. Get ready for some shocking investigations, while learning how electricity powers our everyday gadgets! Let's spark curiosity together!
In PSHE, we will be diving into citizenship by exploring local democracy and the importance of following rules. We will also be lerning about charities, understanding how they help our communities and the role we play in making a difference. It’s all about fostering responsible, engaged citizens!
In outdoor PE children will be focussing on striking and fielding through cricket. They will be developing the concept of batting and fielding, throwing underarm and overarm as well as catching and striking.
Year 4 children will be attending swimming lessons at Beverley Leisure Centre, where they will be taught to
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Our indoor PE will be focussing on invasion games through Benchball. Children will be developing the concept of defending and attacking , teamwork, and coordination.
Values
At Mount Pleasant CE VC Junior School, we pride ourselves on teaching children how to be well-rounded citizens through faith, family and friendship. One way we achieve this is by studying different values each half-term. In the first half of the term, the children will have focussed discussions and tasks around the value of RECPECT and how to show RESPECT to those around us and whom we care for both in school and at home.
LKS2 Homework
There is a minimal expectation for homework in Lower Key Stage 2. The main 'homework' we ask for is that children read a minimum of 3 times per week, acknowledged by at least one signature in their Reading Record. When entering this in your child's Reading Record, this should be either as 3 separate entries which are dated or a single entry which clearly states the amount of times your child has read.
We would like children to engage in as much of the learning possible out of school. This includes accessing Accelerated Reader, Times Table Rockstars, and revising spelling lists which they are given.
Forest School
During the Spring Term, classes in Lower Key Stage 2 will have their forest school sessions. Please see the date below for your child(ren)'s class:
25th April: Class 3

16th May: Class 2
23rd May: Class 2

All forest school events take place on a Friday. Children are to arrive at school in clothing which will keep them comfortable and warming during their lesson as it will take place outdoors. Children need to have footwear appropriate for being outside in a forest area.
School Uniform
PE clothes must be black bottoms or shorts and a white top for PE (no large logos or football kits). Children can also wear an MPJS sports hoodie if they wish but this is optional. For all other days where PE is not on the timetable for your child, they must be in full school uniform. The uniform needs to be black or grey trousers or a skirt, a sky blue polo shirt and a navy blue jumper. The uniform does not need to have a school logo. As for shoes, any outside shoes are fine (including trainers) but children must have some indoor shoes (plimsolls/sandshoes) to change into. Blue and white checked pinafore dresses are also acceptable.
Please support the staff team in providing the best education for your child and support our school in maintaining its high standards by ensuring that your child is at school each day, on time and in the correct school uniform.

The policy for PE kits will remain the same as previous years, meaning children will need to arrive to school on their PE days wearing their PE kit.
