Religious Education at Mount Pleasant CE Junior School

As a Church of England school, the Christian faith is the foundation of all that we do at Mount Pleasant. In every aspect of learning and daily life, we seek to live out our school vision. We strive to create an environment where every child feels known, accepted and valued as an individual, within a caring and supportive community.

Our broad and balanced curriculum is designed to help children explore, discover and flourish, enabling them to achieve their very best. We make meaningful links between knowledge and skills, celebrate opportunities within our local area, and raise aspirations so that every pupil can see the possibilities ahead of them.

Religious Education (RE) is taught in line with the East Riding Agreed Syllabus, supported by units from Understanding Christianity. This approach allows us to teach about a wide range of religious and non-religious worldviews. RE helps pupils to value their own and others’ beliefs and cultures, while developing an understanding of the significance of religion in today’s world.

Through Religious Education, we aim to nurture respect, understanding and empathy, while also challenging prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes. The purpose of RE at Mount Pleasant is to build religious literacy – equipping children to reflect on their uniqueness, share their feelings and experiences, and appreciate the importance of forming positive relationships. Our goal is for every child to be able to hold a balanced and well informed conversation about religion and belief.

Our RE Curriculum

At Mount Pleasant, we follow the East Riding Locally Agreed Syllabus, supported by units from Understanding Christianity. This ensures that children learn about a wide variety of religious and non-religious worldviews, giving them the opportunity to explore different perspectives and develop respect for others.

The aim of our RE curriculum is to build religious literacy, enabling pupils to understand, reflect on and talk confidently about religion and belief.

Our curriculum is taught through a spiral approach, meaning that key knowledge and concepts are revisited regularly. This allows pupils to recap and deepen their understanding over time, helping them to secure and build on what they have previously learned.
