Promoting British Values at Our School

As a Voluntary Controlled Church of England school, Mount Pleasant is committed to promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

These values are closely linked to our Christian ethos and core values of Friendship, Trust and Forgiveness, which shape the caring, family-like atmosphere of our school and underpin everything we do.

Democracy

We actively encourage pupils to have a voice in school life. Our School Council is elected by pupils and plays an important role in decision making and shaping the direction of the school. Staff and governors also model democratic processes, ensuring that all stakeholders are represented.

In lessons, democratic principles are explored through PSHCE, helping pupils to understand how democracy works and how they can contribute to it as responsible citizens.

The Rule of Law

Respect for rules and laws is built into our behaviour and safety policies, which were developed in consultation with pupils, staff, parents and governors. Pupils learn the importance of rules, understand the consequences of their actions, and are supported to make responsible choices that contribute to a safe and positive school environment.

Individual Liberty

We encourage pupils to embrace their individuality and make choices within a safe and supportive framework. Our curriculum and wide range of extracurricular activities help children to express themselves, develop independence, and build confidence, ensuring every child has the opportunity to flourish.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Respect for others, including those with different faiths and beliefs, is promoted throughout our Religious Education and collective worship. Visitors from different world religions regularly share their experiences with pupils, enriching their understanding of diversity.

Tolerance is not only taught but lived in our daily interactions, fostering positive relationships across the school community. Our PSHCE curriculum further reinforces the importance of respecting differences, preparing pupils to engage positively in a diverse and modern society.

Our Commitment

By embedding British values across school life, we aim to nurture well-rounded individuals who are respectful, confident and compassionate. At Mount Pleasant, we are proud to prepare pupils to make a positive contribution both in their local community and in the wider world.
